Indian Developments
Broad markets ended the week on a strong note extending the gains to its second consecutive week, ending August 7, 2026, with the benchmark Nifty 50 gaining 0.8% to close at 24,571. Nifty 100, Nifty Midcap 150, and Nifty Small cap 250 also registered positive weekly returns of 0.9%, 1%, and 2.4% respectively.
INDIA VIX increased marginally by 3.4% over the week, to settle at 12.16 versus last week’s closing at 11.76. Investor sentiment remained cautious as markets weighed geopolitical risks alongside the potential implications of fresh regulatory proposals for the non-bank lending sector.
Sectoral Developments
The Winners: Stronger than expected Q1 corporate earnings results and resilient buying momentum helped certain sectors excel this week. Nifty PSU Banks led the pack with a notable 5% weekly return, followed by Metals (3.7%), Auto (3.1%), IT (2.7%).
The Laggards: Nifty Healthcare and Nifty Pharma ended the week virtually flat, with returns of -0.3% and -0.01% respectively.
Global Developments
USA: Investor optimism over robust earnings growth and enthusiasm over AI buoyed market sentiments. Dow Jones, S&P 500, and NASDAQ reported gains of 3.21%, 3.66%, and 4.88%, respectively.
Asian Markets: Broad bearishness swept across regional economies, keeping domestic indices under structural pressure. While China and Japan clocked weekly returns of 2.32% and 1.93%, the continuing market rout in South Korea due to concerns grew over the durability of AI spending culminated in a weekly loss of 5.10%
