The sell-off crushed large-caps, with Nifty 100 sliding 2.89% to 23,516.50, while the all-inclusive Nifty 500 collapsed 3.08%. High-beta risk segments faced deep liquidations as Nifty Midcap 50 tumbled 3.87% and Nifty Small cap 100 surrendered 3.18%. India VIX exploded upward by 13.79% to cross critical levels at 14.44, reflecting sharp tactical option-pricing anxiety.
Sectoral Developments
The Winners: Nifty IT acted as the sole defensive engine, gaining a minor 0.34% to close at 28,304.70. Nifty Private Bank (-0.25%) and Nifty Media (-0.51%) also restricted their downsides.
The Laggards: Nifty India Internet suffered structural capitulation, plummeting 5.99%. Cyclical and premium growth sectors bore the brunt, with Nifty Consumer Durables crumbling 5.25%, Nifty Auto sinking 5.03%, and Nifty Metal shedding 4.46%.
Global Developments
USA: Wall Street saw highly volatile trading as early relief from cooler inflation metrics was quickly overshadowed by escalating Middle East friction ahead of the policy-dense weekend.
Asian Markets: Aggressive foreign capital flight hit regional tech hubs, with heavy pullouts from South Korean and Japanese chip ecosystems due to soaring global energy costs and geopolitical worries.
