Indian Developments
Broad markets endured intense structural selling, extending their correction into a fourth consecutive weekly decline for the week ending September 11, 2026. The benchmark Nifty 50 crashed by 2.09% to close at 23,398.10, down from 23,897.70 in the prior week. The broader market mirrored this weakness, with the Nifty 100 slipping 1.90% (closing at 24,546.55) and the Nifty Midcap 150 dropping 1.38% (closing at 22,847.85), while the Nifty Small cap 250 showed relative resilience, closing with a minor dip of 0.77% (at 18,339.90).
The fear gauge, India VIX, advanced by 14.89% over the week to settle at 12.27 compared to last week’s closing of 10.68, highlighting growing systemic anxiety as market participants managed multi-sector rotational outflows.
Sectoral Developments
The Winners: Defying widespread selling pressure, isolated pocket buying emerged in defensive and manufacturing spaces. Nifty Healthcare and Nifty Pharma offered a safe haven, advancing 0.51% (to 16,492.10) and 0.21% (to 26,532.40) respectively. Nifty CPSE also found buyers, advancing 0.26% to close at 6,436.30.
The Laggards: High-beta growth engines bore the brunt of the weekly sell-off. Nifty Realty plummeted by a severe 6.54% to close at 848.5, while Nifty IT finished deep in the red, losing 5.78% to close at 28,921.50. Other key cyclical sectors faced intense heat, with Nifty Metal sliding 2.39% (to 12,999.05), Nifty Oil & Gas falling 2.24% (to 10,937.00), and Nifty Auto dropping 1.47% to settle at 27,304.50.
Global Developments
USA: Wall Street benchmarks snapped their previous positive momentum, heading down into the weekend. Concerns that sticky inflation and a strong producer price footprint would prompt the Federal Reserve to implement an interest rate hike at the upcoming FOMC meeting heavily dampened risk appetite.
Asian Markets: A wide divergence gripped regional boards. Broad-based tech spending anxiety triggered heavy capital pullouts from South Korean and Japanese chip ecosystems, pushing regional indices lower as escalating Middle East friction sapped regional sentiment.
